Bohemian Rhapsody

TGIF! and in honor of today’s boho-chic ensemble, there’s a special treat for all you Queen fans out there (Gylli & Beans! I’m talking to you!)… I have a couple friends back in LA who love to sing Bohemian Rhapsody at Karaoke. It’s always such a lovely treat. This outfit made me think of that song, and in turn made me think of those crazy ladies!  I miss you guys :)

Anyway, the first thing some of you may have noticed about today’s look is that it just doesn’t match.  Much to the dismay of some of my friends, and Mr. Fabrice, I’ve always said that matching is over-rated! Sometimes, it’s not about the color, but rather its about the style of pieces.  All of these pieces have a boho-earthy vibe going on, and even though the colors don’t technically match, I think they all complement each other.  I like to think we’ve grown past the Garanimals in 2010?

I think the combination of black and brown is particularly hard for some people. Fabrice is adamantly against it, but I wear it all the time… and he just shakes his head.  I just don’t understand why this color combination is so taboo… especially because this is a color combination that occurs so beautifully in nature.  I suppose its all about the pieces you’re wearing, the fabrication, and how you put them together.  Here I’m wearing a basic black full skirt, and flat over-the-knee brown suede boots.  The black skirt is really just a blank canvas for all the other pieces I am wearing.  I don’t think it clashes with the brown boots at all.  In fact, the black skirt just fades to the background under the tunic.

On the boots… you may remember a post a few weeks back where I mentioned that CSN Stores had contacted me with an opportunity to review one item of my choice. I was given a $65 gift certificate to buy one item from any of their 200 online stores.  If you’ve ever gone on to the CSN Stores website, you know that it can be a little overwhelming a first because there are SO MANY OPTIONS, but I found that there filters were very easy to use, and helped me narrow down my search to find what I wanted.  Once I narrowed down my results, I actually found several pairs of shoes that I liked (see them all here), and their prices are really good. They also offer free shipping on most items, which is a plus for me because quite frankly paying for shipping takes the joy out of online shopping for me!  It was hard to choose but I went with these brown faux suede over-the-knee boots. They are made by Bamboo, and they retail on the CSN online store, for $52.  I love the lace-up and buckle detail on the back, and they are VERY comfortable.  The faux suede material looks great although I will admit that it is not soft and supple like real suede. It kinda just feels like faux suede, I guess. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing.  If you’re just looking for a fun, trendy and comfortable over-the-knee boot, I’d definitely recommend these. Oh, and they come in 3 colors — black, gray, and brown!

Now, on to the tunic. I’ve had this thing for quite a while now, and I have had the hardest time figuring out what to wear it with.  It kinda has a kaftan fit. It actually tied in the back, but I kinda hate things that tie in the back so I cut the ties off.  I really love the embroidery on the front but for whatever reason, I just could not seem to put together a decent outfit with it.  Today, I was DETERMINED to wear this thing so I threw caution to the wind and went all the way boho with it. Brown Suede boots, cognac fringe bag, turquoise chain belt… none of it matches, but in some strange way the tunic ties it all together??? Maybe?

So, what do you think?
Would you wear black and brown together?
In general, do you prefer your ensembles to match for the most part?
Are there any color combinations other than black/brown that are out of the question for you?
… and to get your weekend started off right, enjoy the musical stylings of Queen with Bohemian Rhapsody…
Have a Great Weekend!!!  Thanks for stopping by!
