Let’s Talk Office Chairs: Swivel Chair or Accent Chair?

Let’s Talk Office Chairs!  As I’ve been browsing the web looking for inspiration, I have to say that I have fallen in love with using an arm chair or wing backed chair as an office chair.  It just looks so posh!  The office below give me so much life! Who wouldn’t want to work in that space?

But, is it functional?  I’m definitely getting an L-shaped desk, so I’ll have  my computer set up on one of the surfaces and the other surface will be for writing, and any other non-computer related activities.  Since I’ll be moving from one surface to another, a swivel chair seems much more practical.  Unfortunately, finding a cute swivel chair in my price range is pretty difficult.  Plush swivel chairs that look more like accent chairs with a swivel base range from $300 – $3,000.  REALLY?!! I mean I know ergonomics is important considering how much time we spend in our office chairs, but $3,000? GOOD GRIEF!  I’d like to find a good non-black office chair, with arms for somewhere between $100 – $200.  Is that too much to ask?  And, if I’m gonna pay more than that, I may as well go the accent chair route because at least the chair can be used in other parts of the house later.  And I know what some of you are thinking – DIY.  Any chair can become a swivel chair…and any swivel chair can be reupholstered as an accent chair.  But, you guys, when it comes to DIYs I just have to be honest with myself, and consider whether or not I am REALLY going to do it.  It’s not that I can’t, but if I’m being honest, I probably won’t.  I’m not ruling it out…I’m just being honest with myself about the likelihood of it actually happening.

Here are a few swivel chairs I’m considering…I don’t LOVE any of them, but they are practical and not black. Lol.

Ikea, $119

Ikea, $169

Target, $129

A bobcat print office chair could be fun, right? I’m thinking with white office furniture? It would just be one fun statement piece, and everything else would be neutral…my issue with this chair is it doesn’t have arms, and let’s face it…a cute animal print accent chair would be so much cuter! Lol.

And, here is one of the arm chairs I’m considering! I mean I really love this chair!

Target, $229

So, the question is, do you like the idea of using an accent/arm/wing backed chair as an office chair, or do you think a swivel chair is a must?

I LOVE the idea of using an accent chair as opposed to an office chair. They just look so much more comfy. I don't know how practical it would be if you're moving from one side of the desk to the other though. I would suggest going to Marshall's/Home Goods for accent chairs if you decide to go that route. They always have some and they are usually no more than $100.

For an L shaped desk a swivel chair makes more sense. But why not add castors or wheels to that Target armchair? Best of both worlds.

  4. Girl, this sounds so much like me. That's why I still have no chair to my desky in my Office/Guest Room. LOL!! I just can't pick any old thing and the problem usually is that the cute ones are never as functional as we'd like them to be. UGH!! Plus I'm not a DIY Queen either. Good Luck with your search.

IKEA has a lot of great chairs I considered getting one white faux leather swivel office chair but found one at Macy's furniture clearance store at the Towne Center mall instead. You should check it out, everything on the floor is marked down considerably.

  6. GO with the accent arm chair, none of those scream Ebs to me! The last one is you!

You could always take a regular-legged accent chair that you like and put small wheels on the bottom of each leg. That way the chair may not "swivel" but you can roll it so either side and turn it relatively easy (like a screw or two for each leg) and you can get small casters at Lowes or any home improvement store. That way you aren't limited to the less than fun office chair. :)

    • That is a REALLY great idea, Katie! Someone else also suggested casters. Okay, so let me ask you this…do you happen to know if casters can be put on any chair? Or does the chair have to have a certain kind of legs? Lol!

I would do the accent chair but I can see me falling asleep at the desk with it…lol. I have a chair with wheels at my home office, but I don't really use the wheels…lol. Go with the animal print!!!

  12. Hmmm… I think that I love the accent chair idea! But you are right, it's gotta be comfortable enough to sit up and work for hours in. Hard decision (nail biter). I do love the animal print Target chair though!

I have two accent chairs. I got them from my chair man in Dallas $20 a piece. Go to Marshalls, TJ or Ross and you can get accent chairs for the low low and office depot has several on sale. Go with accent chair. Or you can go to the office warehouse area get a used swivel chair for $5 and DIY with the fabric you want.
