Wednesday Wisdom: I Will Be Grateful…

I Will Be Grateful for This Day

The last 24 – 36 hours in Atlanta have been grueling and full of uncertainty.  When I woke up at 5am to see that the roads were still gridlocked with stranded motorists being forced to sleep in their cars in below freezing temps…children stuck at school, and even worse, stuck on schoolbuses…my heart was deeply saddened.  I can’t even imagine what it would have been like to be out there.  I rolled over and hugged Fab tight because he only narrowly missed the gridlock.  He left his job in the Perimeter area just before things got really crazy…and even though it took him 3 hours to drive what normally takes about 15 – 20 minutes…he made it home.  For that, I am so grateful.  Fab also talked to his dad this morning, and both he and my mother-in-law also made it home safely.  I was really worried because my mother-in-law is actually a teacher in Fulton county and she had to battle all that craziness getting over to the southside.  So again, I am just grateful.

And, I know that ATLiens are angry…how could this have happened again?  It was just 3 years ago that we were in basically the same situation when an ice storm came through and shut the city down completely.  Why were we not prepared?  We knew this storm was coming.  But, even in the midst of the anger,  I am so grateful that the worst seems to be behind us.  And, I am grateful for all the retail stores like Home Depot, Target, and many more that opened their doors to stranded motorists so they wouldn’t have to sleep in the cold…and I’m grateful for the many kind souls that trekked through the snow and ice to bring people food and beverage…and I am grateful for the local and state agencies and emergency services that have no doubt been working tirelessly to clear the roads.

It’s gonna be another cooooooold night, but the snow has passed and salt trucks are busy…hopefully tomorrow things will start to get back to normal in Atlanta…in the meantime, I hope all my fellow ATLiens have made it home safely…
